If you have been watching the TV spots and trailers for the new Star Trek movie, Into Darkness, than you have surely seen some fleeting clips of the newly styled Klingon Batleth swords.
The directors of Into Darkness have added many new subtle (and some not-so-subtle) features to the aesthetics of the Klingons and their technology including the New Batleth.

With the old styled Bat’leths, the blades generally followed the curvature of the handle and the sword would make a “U” shape with the handle. The new bat’leth style shows the blades curving outwards at the end in three separate prongs while still maintaining the curved handle piece. As any Star Trek fan knows, the Bat’leth is the go-to handheld weapon of the Klingons. But the Bat’leth is not just a weapon of the fictional Star Trek universe. In fact, there are many martial arts practices in real life that utilize the Bat’leth as a feasible weapon in practice and tournaments. However, the weapon is iconic to most Star Trek fans and most readily recognized as the token hand held weapon of the Klingons, both new and old.
